HENRY JOSEPH BATCHELOR
Remembered with honour Vis-en-Artois Memorial: Panel 9.
He enlisted in Watford 24 November 1915 for the Duration of the War: a gardener and handyman with the London County Council aged 32, married, 5’4″ tall, of Watford, and was formerly Private 25569 Northamptonshire Regiment. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion Northants 29 September 1916 and transferred to the 6th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment 14 October 1916. Admitted to 33 Field Ambulance with myalgia 12 May 1917. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.

Son of Jane (nee BROWN) and the late Thomas BATCHELOR; husband of Martha (nee GIBSON) BATCHELOR.
His parents married 7 August 1876 at St Peter’s, Berkhamsted, Herts. Thomas died 1916 in Watford aged 66, and was buried 29 March in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Jane died 1918 in Watford aged 70, and was buried 11 November, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Henry was born 1883 in Watford, and attended Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 2 February 1891 to 16 February 1893. He married 29 March 1913 at St James’, Bushey, Herts, and was employed by the London County Council in their Education Officer’s Department. Martha never remarried, she died 1954 in Bushey aged 69, and was buried 4 December at St James’, Bushey.
On the 1891 Census, aged 7 he lived in Ivinghoe, Bucks. On the 1901 Census, a gardener aged 17, he lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1911 Census, a kitchen gardener aged 27, he still lived in Watford, is parents and two siblings.
