GEORGE HARVEY

He joined the Royal Horse Artillery at Woolwich, London, 23 June 1902, Gunner 20888, for 3 years service + 9 years in the Reserves: a clerk aged 24, 5’10” tall, C of E. He served at Home from 23 June 1902 to 26 December 1911, during which time he was appointed Acting Bombardier 27 May 1902, and promoted Bombardier 9 January 1911. He extended his service to complete 12 years with the Colours 22 July 1909, and re-engaged at Plymouth to complete 21 years service 22 November 1911. He served in Gibraltar from 27 December 1911 to 18 March 1913, and in Malta from 19 March 1913 to 5 March 1915, during which time he was promoted to Company Sergeant Major 27 June 1913. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant 6 March 1915; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 4 March 1915, and was killed in action.
There is a Death announcement for George in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 30 June 1917.
Son of Catherine (nee MORTIMER) and the late Frederick Rosengrave HARVEY; husband of Gladys (nee BENNETT) HARVEY of Seaton, Devon.
His parents married 30 January 1873 at St Jude’s, Southwark, London. Frederick died 6 July 1913 in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, aged 73; Catherine died 15 October 1921 in Eastbourne, Sussex, aged 71.
George was born 1878 in Brighton, Sussex, and married 1917 in the Kingsbridge, Devon, district.
He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1881 Census, aged 2 he lived in Brighton, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1891 Census, aged 12 he was a pupil at a school in Brighton. On the 1901 Census, a solicitor aged 20 he lived in Bexhill-on-Sea, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1911 Census, a Bombardier in the Royal Garrison Artillery aged 32, he was stationed in Plymouth, Devon.
