ALFRED CHARLES STRUGNELL

He originally attested 23 June 1906 in Colchester, Essex, 7 years with the Colours, 5 years in the Reserves, with the 16th Lancers: aged 17, 5’7″ tall, C of E; next-of-kin his mother of Croxley Green, Herts. He was promoted Trumpeter 1 October 1907, and extended his service to 12 years with the Colours 4 July 1911. He was promoted Sergeant 17 August 1913, and gained his commission 14 June 1916 in the Field. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 17 August 1914; the medals were sent to his father of Croxley Green. He was killed in action at Montauban.

Son of Dora (nee GOODE) and the late Alfred Charles STRUGNELL.
His parents married 1886 in the Farnham, Surrey, district. Alfred died 14 January 1914 in Brompton. Middx, aged 60; Dora died 18 July 1941 in Nottingham aged 78.
Alfred was born 9 March (or 13 June) 1889 in the Farnham district. He attended Callowland Board School, Watford, from 26 October 1896 to 19 March 1897; then the National School, Croxley Green; then Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 13 June 1898 to 19 December 1902; finally Watford Grammar School from January 1903 to July 1906. He had been a member of the Croxley Green Church Lads’ Brigade.
He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1891 Census, the whole family is proving elusive. On the 1901 Census, aged 12 he lived in Rickmansworth, Herts, with his parents and one sibling. On the 1911 Census, a Lance-Corporal in the 16th Lancers aged 22, he was stationed in Norwich, Norfolk.
