FREDERICK GEORGE DEAN
Remembered with honour Guards’ Cemetery: Plot VIII, Row M, Grave 1.
He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 1581 Hertfordshire Regiment. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action. Unfortunately, Frederick’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
There is an article about and a Death announcement for Frederick in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 7 October 1916; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 15 September 1917.
Son of Alfred Frederick and Fanny (nee BURGIN) DEAN; husband of Alice Rose DUNKLEY (formerly DEAN, nee GRAVESTOCK) of Watford.
His parents married 26 April 1890 at St Mary Magdalene, Flaunden, Herts. Alfred died 1947 in Watford aged 76, and was buried 24 December in North Watford Cemetery; Fanny died 1961 in Watford aged 91, and was buried 4 April, also in North Watford Cemetery.
Frederick was born 14 July 1890 in Watford, and baptised 21 November 1890 at St Mary’s, Watford. He attended first Sotheron Road Infants’ School, Watford; then Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 4 October 1897 to 8 July 1904. He married 1914 in the Watford district; they had one child. Alice remarried 1918 in the Watford district to William H DUNKLEY, and died 9 July 1973 in Watford aged 84.
On the 1891 Census, aged 9 months he lived in Watford, with his parents and no siblings. On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, a packer at a sweet manufacturers aged 20, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.
