REGINALD ST GEORGE LAKE

He attested 5 August 1914 at Lincoln’s Inn, London, in the Territorial Force (4 years service in the U.K.): a bank clerk with Messrs Child & Co, Fleet Street, London E.C. aged 26, 5’9″ tall. He was already serving in the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment (Militia), was Private 998 in the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps, and was discharged in consequence of appointment to a commission with the 4th Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. He served at Home from 5 August 1914 to 8 March 1915, was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being May 1915, and was killed in action.
There are articles about Reginald in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 15 August 1914, 5 June 1915, 20 May 1916, and 25 November 1916 (including a Death announcement); plus a plaque in St Mary’s Parish Church commemorating Reginald and his brother.
Son of Reginald John and Mary Beatrice (nee GREENE) LAKE of Watford.
His parents married 1879 in the Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, district. Reginald died 28 February 1923 in Watford aged 73, and was buried 3 March in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Mary died 5 February 1940 in Watford aged 81, and was buried 8 February, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Reginald was born 4 December 1887 in Watford, and baptised 28 January 1888 at St Mary’s, Watford. He attended Berkhamsted School, Herts, until 1905.
He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1891 Census, aged 3 he lived in Watford, with his parents and seven siblings. On the 1901 Census, aged 13 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a banker aged 23, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and six siblings.
