JAMES EDWARD HUTLEY
Remembered with honour Meteren Military Cemetery: Plot IV, Row G, Grave 750.
He enlisted 23 August 1915 in Holdsworthy, New South Wales: a farmer aged 22, 5’3½” tall, of Bondi, N.S.W. He embarked 20 December 1915 at Sydney, N.S.W. aboard H.M.A.T. Suevic for Gallipoli via Alexandria, Egypt, as part of the 19th Battalion. He was transferred to the 4th Battalion 14 February 1916, and embarked 23 March 1916 from Alexandria aboard H.M.A.T. SImla to join the B.E.F., disembarking Marsailles, France, 30 March 1916. He was wounded in action 18 August 1916 with a gun shot wound to his forearm, and spent much time in Casualty Clearing Stations and hospitals before being killed in action by an exploding shell. He was originally buried La Roukloshille Military Cemetery; his next-of-kin was his mother of Forest Hill, Kent. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals.
Son of Eliza Laura (nee POWELL) and the late Charles HUTLEY.
His parents married 6 March 1880 at St Philip’s, Dalston, London. Charles died 1905 in the Paddington, London, district aged 48; Eliza died 1933 in Watford aged 75, and was buried 2 November in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.
James was born 21 October 1892 in Stansted, Essex, and attended St John’s Boys’ School, Paddington; then Alexandra School, Watford, from 27 March 1905 to 2 August 1896. He emigrated to Australia 5 May 1911 aboard the Shaw Savill and Albany Line Mamari London to Sydney; he was a labourer.
On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Stansted, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1911 Census, a house boy aged 18, he lived in Esher, Surrey.
