RALPH FREDERICK JONES
Remembered with honour Whitstable (All Saints) Churchyard, Kent.
He enlisted 7 September 1914 in Watford for Short Service (3 years with the Colours): a carpenter and joiner aged 20, C of E, 6’1½” tall. He served at Home until 25 July 1915 when he embarked from Southampton, serving in France until 24 July 1914. Whilst in France he was admitted to No. 5 Casualty Clearing Station 8 July 1916 with bronchitis; 1st Canadian General Ambulance, Etaples, 20 July 1916 with rheumatism; and returned to England on H.S. Newhaven 24 July 1916. He was appointed Lance-Corporal 1 January 1915, promoted to Corporal 27 February 1915, and promoted to Sergeant 16 July 1915. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 26 July 1915, and was discharged 20 March 1917 at Warley: age 23, 6’2″ tall, carpenter and joiner of Watford, being no longer physically fit for war service – traumatic neurasthenia resulting from being blown up by a mine in the trenches 8 July 1916 at Montauban, France. He was two days unconscious before being found, and developed paralysis of the left arm. The Silver War Badge was issued 3 April 1917.
Son of Charles Edward and Amelia Frederica (nee MORSE) JONES.
His parents married 2 September 1889 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Hampstead, London. Amelia died 9 March 1931 in Ventnor, Isle of Wight aged 63; Charles died 1945 in the Watford district aged 86.
Ralph was born 1894 in Hendon, Middx.
On the 1901 Census, he lived in Hampstead, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, a cabinet maker aged 16, he lived in Oxhey, Herts, with his parents and three siblings.
