DAVID [or DANIEL] EVANS
Remembered with honour Glasgow Western Necropolis: Row P, Grave 2586.
He originally attested 12 November 1894 in Watford in the Militia, no. 2916 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment: a labourer aged 18 of Bushey, Herts, 5’4½” tall, C of E. He reattested 31 May 1915 at Aldershot, Hants, for Short Service (Duration of the War): a labourer aged 37, 5’5″ tall, of Oxhey, Herts. He served at Home 31 May to 24 June 1915, with the B.E.F. in France 25 June 1915 to 11 November 1918, Home again from 12 November 1915. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 28 June 1915, and died from broncho-pneumonia at the 3rd Scottish General Hospital, Stabhill, Glasgow. He does not appear to have an entry in Soldiers died in the Great War 1914-1919.
Son of the late Thomas and Ann Hills (nee HAWKINS) EVANS; husband of Avis Augusta Elizabeth (nee PAYNE) EVANS of Oxhey.
His parents married 27 December 1862 at St James’, Bushey. Thomas died 1895 in Bushey aged 55, and was buried 7 January at St James’, Bushey; Ann died 1911 in Bushey aged 67, and was buried 5 April, also at St James’.
David was born 22 November 1876, and baptised 25 February 1877 at St James’, Bushey. He married 2 August 1897 at St James’, Bushey. Avis never remarried, she died 12 July 1941 in Oxhey aged 62, and was buried 17 July at St James’, Bushey.
On the 1881 Census, aged 4 he lived in Bushey, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1891 Census, aged 14 he still lived in Bushey, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1901 Census, there is no trace of the family in Bushey/Oxhey. On the 1911 Census, a farm labourer aged 33, he lived in Oxhey, with his wife ans six children.
