JAMES STACEY

He originally enlisted 14 June 1908 in Hertford, Private 5463 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment: a labourer aged 25, 5’5½” tall; he was discharged 22 November 1909. He re-enlisted 11 October 1914 in Leicester: a labourer aged 30, 5’5″ tall; he was formerly Sergeant 8651 Bedfordshire Regiment. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.

Son of James and Louisa (nee WEST) STACEY; husband of Elizabeth GRASS (formerly STACEY, nee WILSON) of Watford.
His parents married 8 May 1882 at St Mary’s, Willesden, London. Louisa died 1918 in the Leicester district aged 60.
James was born 24 April 1884 in Hammersmith, London, and attended first St Andrew’s Infants’ School, Watford; then Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 20 January 1891 to 13 July 1894, and again from 10 December 1894 to 14 February 1896. He married 1903 in the Watford district; they had eight children. Elizabeth remarried 1919 in the Watford district to Robert GRASS, and died 1961 in the Watford district aged 77.
On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 6 he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1901 Census, a bricklayer’s labourer aged 16, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and six siblings. On the 1911 Census, a bricklayer’s labourer aged 27, he still lived in Watford, with his wife and four children.
