HARRY JOHN STOCKMAN
Remembered with honour Vis-en-Artois Memorial: Panel 7.
He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private T/4/107956 Army Service Corps and 36743 20th Battalion London Regiment. He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 2 June 1915, and was killed in action. Unfortunately, Harry’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
There is an article about and a Death announcement for Harry in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 5 October 1918; plus an In Memoriam in the issue dated 20 September 1919.
Son of Herbert Joseph STOCKMAN of St Alban’s, Herts, and Emma (nee BIRD) STOCKMAN; husband of Lilian May (nee POPLETT) STOCKMAN of Bushey, Herts.
His parents married 22 February 1885 at All Saints, Notting Hill, London. Emma died 1928 in Watford aged 65, and was buried 13 October at St James’, Bushey; Herbert died 1933 in Harpenden, Herts, aged 70, and was buried 4 November, also at St James’.
Harry was born 31 March 1890 in Islington, London, and baptised 16 May 1907 at St James’, Bushey. He married 1916 in the Watford district; they had one child. Lilian never remarried, and died 1977 in the Watford district aged 87.
There is Marriage announcement for Harry in the Observer dated 15 January 1916.
On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Islington, with his parents and one sibling. On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he lived in Bushey, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, a printing labourer aged 21, he still lived in Bushey, with his parents and four siblings.
There is an In Memoriam for Harry in the Watford Observer dated 9 November 2018.
