THOMAS PARRY/PENRY/HENRY LLOYD
Remembered with honour Abbeville Communal Cemetery: Plot V, Row C, Grave 15.
He enlisted in Bedford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 2 October 1915, and died of wounds received in action. On 10 July 1916, orders were received that the Battalion was to attack Trones Wood next day. The advance was not observed until the leading line was 400 yards from the Wood, when enemy machine guns opened fire. The enemy quickly got their artillery to work and the Battalion suffered many casualties entering the Wood. This may well be when Thomas was wounded, one of 239 other ranks wounded during the engagement. Unfortunately, Thomas’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
There is a Death announcement for Thomas in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 29 July 1916; plus In Memoriams in the issues dated 20 July 1918 and 19 July 1919.
Son of Ezekial and Mary Ann (nee DAVIES) LLOYD of Watford.
His parents married 1884 in the Bedwelty, Monmouth, district. Mary died 1928 in Watford aged 68, and was buried 7 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Ezekial died 1943 in Watford aged 85, and was buried 18 February, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Thomas was born 19 December 1893 in Abergavenny, Monmouth. He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 5 March 1900 to 22 May 1908. He resided in Watford.
On the 1901 Census, aged 7 he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a copper printer aged 17, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings.
