CHARLES ERNEST HIGGINBOTHAM

He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 6 November 1914, and was killed in action.
Son of Charles Titus and Agnes (nee KER) HIGGINBOTHAM of Milngavie, Glasgow; husband of 1) Florence Hunton (nee HOPKINS) HIGGINBOTHAM; 2) Lucy Frances Gray (nee ROUND) HIGGINBOTHAM.
Charles was born 4 July 1866 in Anderston, Glasgow, and after attending Rugby School and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, was stationed in the Far East, where he played cricket for the Straits Settlements. He served during the Second Boer War, also fitting in some Minor Counties cricket for Devon. Whilst in South Africa, he made his first-class debut in January 1906, playing for the South African Army against the touring M.C.C. team; he was a right-handed batsman. He married firstly 1890; Florence died 17 January 1907 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. He married secondly 23 January 1909 at St Peter’s, Birch, Essex. Lucy died 5 March 1915 in Colchester, Essex, and was buried 9 March at St Peter’s, Birch.
There is an obituary for Charles in the Glasgow Herald dated 28 March 1915, and an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1871 Census, aged 4 he lived in Larbert, Stirlingshire, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1881 Census, a scholar aged 14 he was a pupil at Rugby School. On the 1891 Census, he is proving elusive, presumably with the Army somewhere. On the 1901 Census, a Captain in the Army aged 34 he lived in Devonport, with his first wife and no children. On the 1911 Census, a Major in an infantry Regiment aged 45 he lived in Farnborough, Hants, with his second wife and no children
