SAMUEL GEORGE HAYLOCK

He attested 29 May 1915 in London N.E. for the Territorial Force, 4 years’ service in the United Kingdom, Sapper 2508 1st London Divisional Engineers, of Watford. He had previously been in the 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (disbanded). He was transferred to the 1/2nd Field Company 14 January 1916 and was with the 510th Battalion Royal Engineers when he was killed in action. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals.
There is an In Memoriam for Samuel in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 2 February 1918.
Son of Frederick Giles and Ellen (nee TAYLOR) HAYLOCK of Watford; husband of Florence Clara BRIDGER (formerly HAYLOCK, nee ATKINS) of Abbot’s Langley, Herts.
His parents married 11 March 1882 at St Giles’, Ickenham, Middx. Ellen died 1922 in Watford aged 67, and was buried 4 February in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Frederick died 1945 in Watford aged 87, and was buried 30 November, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Samuel was born 1885 in St Alban’s, Herts, and baptised 11 April 1886 at All Saints, Leavesden, Herts. He married 14 May 1910 at Christ Church, Watford; they had four children. He resided in Watford or Abbot’s Langley. Florence remarried 1923 in the Watford district to Thomas F H BRIDGER, and died 4 December 1975 in Longwick, Bucks, aged 83.
On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 5 he lived in Leavesden, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1901 Census, a railway carriage cleaner aged 15, he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a house painter aged 25, he still lived in Watford, with his wife and one child.
