HAROLD/HARROLD DAVID SLEAT

He attested for Short Service (Duration of the War) 11 November 1914 in London: a clerk aged 22, 5’5½” tall, C of E, of Oxhey, Herts. He served at Home 11 November 1914 to 13 April 1917 as Private 3324 Army Pay Corps, during which time he was appointed temporary Lance-Corporal 7 May 1915. He reverted to Private 9 December 1916 and transferred to the 25th Training Reserve Battalion Machine Gun Corps; and transferred to the 33rd Battalion 8 February 1917. He embarked from Folkstone 14 April 1917 to France, and granted leave from 16 February to 2 March 1918. He was reported missing 16 April 1918 in France, his death being accepted on that date. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals.
Son of Martin and Alice (nee PRITCHARD) SLEAT of Oxhey.
His parents married 13 August 1887 at St Pancras Parish Church, London. Martin died 27 February 1920 in Oxhey aged 65, and was buried 4 March at St James’, Bushey, Herts; Alice died 1927 in Oxhey aged 66, and was buried 5 October, also at St James.
Harold was born 12 May 1892 in Oxhey, and baptised 26 August 1892 at St Matthew’s, Oxhey. He attended first Bushey Infants’ School; then Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 1 February 1899 to 26 March 1902,
On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Oxhey, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1911 Census, a railway clerk aged 18, he still lived in Oxhey, with his parents and three siblings.
