Watford

Watford 1840s

This is a sort of a remembering events, like I remember that as a child in Watford the trams were still running and as we rode our bikes up Market Street the wheels would get caught in the lines. Also at the rear of the Post Office there was a cattle market and the cattle would be driven up the High Street and into Market Street, some of them didn’t have to go far as the abattoir was just across the road.

The old Market was a great place with its stalls and the Arcade cafe at the rear. Every one from Watford went to Watford Fields School then on to Victoria which I am told has now been pulled down – a real shame, it was a great Victorian School.

I believe that Watford had the most pubs in the High Street than any other town. The Rose & Crown still had sawdust on the floor, my mum and dad used to go to the pub in King Street (also gone).

Also in those days if you went anywhere by train you used Watford High Station as the trains to London all went through this station. That’s when the Bakerloo and Euston trains were running.
