A community within a community

By Rodney Cox

For the first 15 years of my life, I lived in Whippendell Road in the section intersected by Durban Road and Harwoods Road. Although regular trips into town, you found most of your daily requirements served by local shops.

I wonder if other readers might recall some of the names.

  • Mr Ferguson who ran the general store on the corner of Whippendell and Burton Avenue (and would allow my Mum a little tick on the groceries if she were short till payday Friday, bless him).
  • Hones, newsagents on the corner of Durban road, where I would collect my comic. Film Fun every Tuesday.
  • Lunnies. A greengrocer just opposite run by two sisters. The smell of fresh apples in the store. The tins of biscuits, open. The proverbial chair by the counter for older folk to sit awaiting their order to be made up.
  • The Yorkshire Bakery on the corner of Burton Road and where my mother would send me with a jug to get a jug of hot peppery gravy.
  • Just around the corner on the junction of Chester Road/Durban Road was Whites the baker. The actual bakery was behind the shop and my Mother would send me to the yard to buy a completely fresh, hot loaf in the morning before going to school. (Amazing how each loaf got a tiny corner chewed by the timeĀ  it arrived home!)

So many memories flooding back, but will leave them forĀ  another time.
