I was born and bought up in Watford, on the Harebreaks estate, Beech Road number 28 was home, my dad Stanley was a Steam Train Engine Driver, working out of Watford engine shed, as did my eldest brother Peter.
I certainly remember the Dell as a hole in the ground, which as kids we used to slide down on sheets of corrugated tin, the Scouts Hut was close by. We also used to make trollies out of scraps of timber and old pram wheels, then take our lives in our hands by racing down Fuller road Hill, cars were scarce luckily, but there were a few, the Crossroads at Middle Way and Fuller Road was a heartstopper sometimes. There were lovely Cherry Trees down the Harebreaks, we used to climb them, eat the Cherries then drop the pips and unedible ones on the heads of unsuspecting passers by. Yeatmans Factory made sweets for Woolworths, several Mums worked there, so we always had Jellies and fondant creams at Christmas. Lovely memorable childhood on the Harebreaks. Ray.

  • Hi there,

I’m desperately searching for any information about my Mum’s (father’s) family.

Her Dad’s name was Michael Sturgess and he was born in 1941 in Derby Road, Watford. His mother was Ruby Doris Sturgess, born in 1901 and lived in Luton her whole life (other than moving to Watford in 1939, living in Fuller Road, Derby Road and giving birth).

The issue is there is no record of Michael’s father, he was given Ruby’s surname and a father is not listed on the birth certificate. That being said, if anyone feels they may have known of Ruby or Michael, please get in touch.

I have no record of where he may have gone to school as a child or where he was brought up but I do know he worked for Shell Mex and BP in Hemel while he lived in Harris Road, Garston with his wife and three children – working as a petrol tanker driver, he unfortunately died in a road traffic accident in 1973.

Key dates and locations would be Fuller Road, 1939 for Ruby, Derby Road 1941, Devon Road and Harris Road 1960s.

    Thank you all!

    Lisa
