Trewins in Queens Road

Does anyone know what was in the buildings where Trewins started in the 60’s
I started working there around 1963/4 and was amazed by the office I was told I would be working in. Well there were curtains and wallpaper of a child’s bedroom. The room was very old with creaking floors that were covered in linoleum. A few years later were all moved into new bran new offices that had been built around us. I can remember builders trying to peer through the old child patterned curtains at us and being really annoyingly stupid. The new Trewins offices were a great improvement and very modern for that time. Not long after I was promoted to what they then called Dissections office and that was at the top of the big old building by their carpark. Yes! Back too an old office, but I loved it. No computers then. We were responsible for collating each days sales. And I had to put all the amounts into very large books and balance them all on Friday afternoons.
Anyway all that has changed again, but I have always wondered who that nursery /office belonged to.
I have also wondered what became of a friend I had there. Barbara Newman who’s father Ivor had the Pet shop in Queens Road. I also remember the talking Parrot.
Barbara Spendiff nee Clarke.

  • In the late 1930s – early 1940s Trewins was a shop on the north side of Queens Road, just past what was then the Technical College. I think it was a smaller-than-Cawdells-or-Clements department store, but what caught my attention was that, in the period before Christmas each year, the toy section in the basement had a model railway layout, Hornby Dublo, but I think also Hornby O-gauge. Happy times!
