Northfield School for Girls

1981 to 1988

By Dina A

For a number of years, I have been wanting to reconnect with students of Northfield School near Cassio College in Watford, with class of GCSC level 1988! Wondering how we all grew up and how are our teachers are and if anyone has reconnected with: Mrs Patterson (Geography), Mrs Elliott (Chemistry) and the French/German teacher who was my favourite but oddly I cant remember her name!!

Is there anyone out there who recalls this class and our teachers?? I remember classmates Nicole, Hazel Kirby, Winnie Wong, Elaine, Danielle Katz, Abigail and her cousin Donna, best friends Lorna and Katie. We also were joined briefly by Belinda Serra.

Where are you guys???

  • Just found this page!
My lovely Mum, Shirley Wykes, went to Northfield School for Girls.
Sadly, Mum died on 22/3/21. She used to tell us about her school days with fondness.
If anyone would like to drop me a line that knew Mum, my email is Lisamaxwell2809@yahoo.co.uk

  • Having said I am not in touch with anyone, that is a lie. Ann McCarthy (from Canada) and I still message one another and I did go out to see her about six years ago. She was only at Northfield for a couple of years while her father worked over here. We have managed to stay in touch on and off all this time.

  • Yes I was there from 1956 to 1961 and remember many names of classmates and teachers. The gardener, Mr Howarth who we all referred to as Beetle had a band in his spare time and I remember it being terrific. Also boys from Merchant Taylors would be shipped in for our dances! Not really in touch with anyone but would love to hear.

  • I was at Northfield School just as Miss Harris was retiring
and when my younger sister was born – July 1969. I have a photo of myself on her lap- as the youngest member of her school. Sonja and Sabina Mac are also in the same photo. In September,I believe Mrs. Timms became headteacher. I can remember Vanessa Membrey joined after that and Georgina Baker was excellent at netball. Unfortunately my younger sister Annette passed away in March 2019- she was at Northfield for only a short time before moving to Nascot Wood. I think my older brother was also there before moving on to a prep school- Mark Etkind. I remember Mrs. Winters- also Melanie Crosse, Caroline Evans, Judy Lindeck also Deborah Green and Rosemary Rees.

  • It’s wonderful to find this page. I went to Northfield around in Kindergarten around 1969, with Miss Ashbolt as my teacher. I went to Mascot Wood for a short time too, before moving away to Bedfordshire. I started commuting there again from 1976 – 1978.

I remember a few names – Caroline Small, Rebecca Segalov, Susie Marchetti, Kathryn (Ken) Dodd, Alison Smart. Teachers I remember- Mrs Labbey, Mrs Timms, a wonderful music teacher – Mrs Winter, Headmistress Miss Harris, PE teacher Mrs Smith… a great German teacher – Frau Reisner.

I had friends in years above me too – Tracey Wood, Thurman Freeman…

It was a great school. Fond memories.

  • I went to Northfield school 1972-75 I remember teachers Mrs Acton Mrs Slade. I loved sporto day and the drinks on the playing field before the school was invited to the front lawn to meet up with our parents and teachers after. My friends were Deborah Marwood, Amanda Pike and Claire Boxall I would love to know where they are now

  • I was at Northfield from 1965 to 1975. Teachers I remember were Mrs Toombs, Miss Elvidge, Miss Scott (I remember sitting next to Alison Ashmore who used to bite people – very sad really). Mrs Steel (Maths), Mr Knight (Chemistry), Mrs Timms (Geography & eventually Head), Mrs Hamilton (Human Biology).

Bryony Spencer I remember you in the class above mine. I must admit I didn’t like you very much, as you were quite loud and rude, but the fact you suffered from dyslexia may explain a lot, and of course at that time it was not really an accepted issue. So now I can quite understand why you behaved that way, and I am sure you are a lovely lady.

I was pretty naughty as I used to climb over the fence by the woods and get on the cutting by the railway. This was with Helen Coats (now sadly deceased), Hazel Clifton and Ann Magee. When we were found out we naturally had detention, which I believe was extra Maths which was at least a constructive ‘punishment. Still took me 3 attempts to pass GCE Maths!

  • Would it be possible for a get-together? I am 82 this year, but surely there must be many classmates alive from the 40’s and early 50’s. ’ I was told Judy Bakker has died, but where are Jessica Norwood, Shirley Wykes, Diana Stabb and that other Judy. I remember Miss Harris well as I was always in trouble, especially when caught sliding past the library at full speed! Remember swimming in green water in the Shirley House pool?

  • Wow. I was at Northfield from 1945 – 1949 -= and I still have my ruler. I remember Gay Sheppard. She had pigtails and I think was in my class. – I can also remember Michael Nassan, and Nina Petal, not to mention Mark Schofield. Apparentlly it rained one day and only one of us had wellingtons, so we decided to share, and at each lamp post we duly swapped boots and shoes Miss Harris – the stables – swimming in Shirley House pool. I remember clearly it rained on a sports day and Miss Harris stomping up and down saying it was not fair everyone else had good weather!!.. and now, we all long for rain in the northwest of New South Wales – been her over 50 years but one never forgets.
PS there were 6 Pearsons when I was there. One family of three Judith Joan and Jennifer and then twins Susanne and Gillian and then me!

  • I was in Miss Woodbridge’s class in 1955/6. I remember Jennifer Collins, Louise Dooey, Dinah Stabb, Shirley King, Marcia Warren and Paula Waller. My name then was Susan Badger and I was newly arrived, fairly traumatised, from a violent Buenos Aires, Argentina. I felt a bit of an outsider at first as no-one could really share my sort of life experiences up to then. My best friend was Paula Waller who joined the class after me as another newcomer. She eventually moved to Surrey. Miss Harris had a study/lounge just down the hall from our classroom, overlooking the garden and I remember her playing us Indian sitar music, rare then, and the first I ever heard. She was a Quaker and worshipped at the Meeting House next door. We used to make branch and brown leaf “camps” in the woods in Autumn and judge whose was best. Mrs Peel used to use me as an example of how to play hockey strokes – badly! I moved on to St Joan of Arc’s in Rickmansworth in 1956.

  • I was at Northfield in 1955/6. Miss Harris was headmistress. Mrs Peel was a fierce gym mistress. Miss Boardman was music teacher. There was a Mrs Higman too.

  • My first wife Valerie Milner Moon attended Northfield School for Girls in the 1940’s. She was also Amy Harris’s Secretary for a few months in about 1965, before the birth of our first child young John in April 1966.

Back then, we knew Amy Harris well and she was at our Wedding in the Quaker Meeting House at Watford in March 1964.

We moved back to my homeland in Australia in 1969 with our two boys young John and Geoff, but Val died suddenly the following year from Leukaemia.

We lived at Balmoral Road, North Watford from 1964 to 1969 and since Val’s death I have been back to England a number of times, including travel with my second wife, Trish.

I am currently working on a Memoire of Val for our sons and grandchildren.

  • i went to Northfield from about 1955 to about 1960. Miss Harris was the headmistress, I remember a Miss Hassell, who had previously taught at a school for the blind, I think the math teacher was Mrs Fry, and there was also a Mrs Sly – but I can’t remember what she taught. Names of girls in my class (the few that I can remember): Paula Howard, Penny Ives, Susan Clayppool Smith, Jennifer Riley, Gay Dennard, Christine Waterhouse, my name then was Susan Riley. Although I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I think I was very lucky to go to this school, despite my best efforts, I did manage to learn something.

I had dislexia.. and still have as u can probably see.. and one day as punishment for some misdomener, I had to read a passage from the bible at essembly and broak down in tears because I was unable to read it properly..

  • I went to Northfield from September 1971 to December 1972. The lovely Mrs Timms tried to talk my parents into leaving me with her when we needed to move home to Sydney Australia due to my grandfather’s illness. So many great girls there but the one I remember the most was Anne Flitt who convinced me to ride horses! I’m so excited to find this page. I’ve been looking for a reference to Northfield for years.

  • I went to Northfield School from about 1959-1969, and remember Miss Norwood, Miss Fleischmann the art teacher, Miss Cole, Miss Harris and her cat ‘Pussy Willow’, and the tall very scary Miss Hassell. Also
Miss Peel the gym mistress and Miss Carter – who inspired us musically. I remember the gym being built and sitting out on the verandah of the chalet beyond it, weaving baskets on sunny days. Also making leaf camps in the woods next to the railway, and the smell of the Lily of the Valley in the hall on Lily Day. Happy Memories.
