What is a Dower House?
A Dowager is a widowed woman who holds the title or property of her deceased husband. A dower house is a house inhabited by the widow or unmarried sisters of the estate-owner. The Dowager would move from the larger house upon the death of her husband if the male heir was married or upon his marriage if the heir was unmarried upon his succession.
Little Cassiobury is thought to be a dower House built for Elizabeth Percy, Countess of Essex.
